Summit Focus:
Lancaster County is a special place with a community that works hard
to ensure it stays that way. Over the past number of years that work has
entailed creating and implementing community based plans for how we
will balance growth and development with open space and farmland
preservation. These efforts have earned Lancaster the reputation as
being a model community throughout the nation.
In recent months, we have been called upon to focus our attention
to an issue of great national concern. With economic growth and
farmland preservation has come the challenge of dealing with our
community’s impact upon the water quality of the Chesapeake Bay.
For years, there has been interest in attacking the pervasive problem
of continued deterioration of the ecosystem which makes up the
Chesapeake Bay watershed. Officials from both the Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA) and the Chesapeake Bay Commission have
found Lancaster County already hard at work addressing issues related
to agricultural practices, municipal waste systems, and development
activities.
The people of Lancaster County are willing to increase their efforts to
address this challenge and the Coalition for Smart Growth is proud to
serve as a resource. The 2010 Smart Growth Summit is designed to
assist in this process.
Join us for a day of enlightening and engaging discussions on how the
Principles of Smart Growth can assist us in facing these challenges. We
look forward to your participation.
